The Sphinx's Green Garden
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's backyard, especially the overgrown garden behind the old shed. One sunny afternoon, she pushed aside a curtain of ivy and discovered something amazing—a stone **sphinx** with emerald eyes, curled fast asleep among the flowers.
"Oh!" Lily gasped. The sphinx stirred, stretching its golden wings.
"Hello, little one," the sphinx rumbled kindly. "I am Cleo. I've been sleeping for a hundred years."
Lily's eyes widened. "A hundred years? Weren't you hungry?"
Cleo laughed, a sound like wind chimes. "Not with my magical garden." She gestured to neat rows of vegetables. "Especially my **spinach**. One leaf gives you enough energy to fly around the world!"
Lily's curly **hair** bounced as she jumped up and down. "Can I try?"
"Only if you solve my riddle," Cleo said solemnly. "What has horns but cannot moo, is strong but gentle, and helped me build this garden?"
Lily thought hard. She knew farm animals from books. "A **bull**?"
Cleo clapped her paws. "Correct! Barnaby is my best friend. He's sleeping behind the oak tree."
A large brown **bull** with the softest brown eyes appeared, nuzzling Cleo's shoulder. He was the gentlest creature Lily had ever seen.
"Barnaby let me fly on his back to collect seeds from all over the world," Cleo explained. "Together, we grew enough magical vegetables to feed everyone who visits."
Lily tried a spinach leaf. Suddenly, she felt light as a feather! She zoomed around the garden with Cleo and Barnaby chasing her.
"Friendship makes even better magic than spinach," Cleo said as they rested. "Barnaby and I have been friends for three hundred years."
Lily hugged them both. "I'll be your friend too!"
Every day after school, Lily returned to help in the garden. She learned that kindness and friendship were the strongest magic of all—stronger than flying spinach or ancient riddles.
And whenever she ate spinach at dinner, Lily smiled, remembering her magical friends and their wonderful garden.
