The Sphinx's Golden Whiskers

Lily loved visiting the old museum after school. But one rainy Tuesday, something magical happened. As lightning flashed outside the tall windows, the stone statue in the Egyptian room began to move.

"I've been waiting for someone brave enough to visit during a storm," said the sphinx, stretching her lion paws and shaking golden dust from her wings. Her hair gleamed like spun sunshine, and her eyes twinkled with ancient wisdom.

Lily gasped. "You're alive!"

"I am," the sphinx purred. "But I have a terrible problem. My cat, Cleo, has run away, and without her, I can't return to my homeland."

"Your cat?" Lily asked.

The sphinx nodded sadly. "She's small and black, with the softest fur in all of Egypt. She chased a butterfly right out of my story book and vanished."

Just then, lightning cracked so brightly it turned the whole room white. A tiny meow echoed from behind a mummy case.

Lily scrambled over and peeked behind. There curled a tiny black cat, trembling with fear.

"Cleo!" The sphinx's face lit up with joy. "You found her!"

The cat leaped into Lily's arms, purring so loudly it sounded like a little motor. Lily stroked her silky fur.

"Thank you," said the sphinx. "For your kindness, I give you this blessing." She touched Lily's forehead with one golden claw. "Whenever you need courage, remember: even the smallest friends can do the biggest things."

With another flash of lightning, the sphinx and her cat disappeared into a swirl of golden sparkles.

Lily ran home through the rain, her heart full of magic. She knew she would never forget the sphinx's lesson — or how something as small as a scared black cat could teach someone as big as a sphinx about the power of friendship and helping others.
