The Sphinx's Golden Vitamin
Lily was playing in her backyard when her golden retriever, Buster, started barking at something behind the old oak tree. When Lily peeked around the trunk, she couldn't believe her eyes. A magnificent sphinx sat there, with the body of a lion and the head of a wise woman. But something was wrong—the sphinx's beautiful golden hair was dull and falling out in clumps.
"Oh dear," the sphinx sighed. "I've forgotten to take my magic vitamin for three hundred years. Without it, my hair loses its power."
Lily stepped forward bravely. "I can help you find it!"
The sphinx smiled gratefully. "Thank you, child. But you must solve my riddle first: I grow but never age, I shed but never disappear. What am I?"
Lily thought hard. Buster nudged her hand, and suddenly she knew. "Hair!"
"Correct!" The sphinx shimmered with delight. "The magic vitamin grows on the moonflowers in the Enchanted Garden. But beware—only someone with a pure heart can pick them."
Lily and Buster set off on their adventure. The Enchanted Garden was hidden behind a waterfall that sparkled like diamonds. Inside, moonflowers glowed softly. But guarding them was a mischievous wind sprite who kept blowing them away.
Buster had an idea. He barked happily and chased his tail, making the sprite laugh so hard that it forgot to blow the flowers away. Lily quickly picked the moonflower and discovered a single glowing vitamin inside its petals.
When they returned, the sphinx swallowed the vitamin. Instantly, her hair transformed into flowing rivers of gold light that swirled around them both.
"For your kindness and bravery," the sphinx said, "I grant you one wish."
Lily thought about toys and candy, but then looked at Buster, who had been her loyal friend through everything. "I wish that Buster could understand everything I say, so we'll always be best friends."
The sphinx touched Buster's forehead with a lock of her golden hair. From that day on, whenever Lily talked, Buster would tilt his head and somehow always knew exactly what she meant. They had many more adventures together, but none quite as magical as the day they helped a sphinx find her vitamin.
