The Sphinx's Golden Splash
Lily pressed her nose against the old library window, watching the rain dance on the glass. Tomorrow was the school running race, and her stomach felt like it was full of fluttering butterflies.
"I'll never win," she whispered. "Everyone runs faster than me."
That's when she noticed something strange in the reflection of the garden pool below. A golden shape was moving near the water's edge.
Lily tiptoed outside, her curiosity bigger than her fear. There, sitting beside the shimmering pool, was the most extraordinary creature she had ever seen. It had the body of a lion and the head of a wise, kind woman with golden feathers.
"A sphinx!" Lily gasped.
The sphinx blinked her amber eyes slowly. "Hello, little one. I am Cleo, guardian of wishes. I've been waiting for someone brave enough to visit my pool."
"Brave?" Lily's eyes went wide. "I'm not brave at all. I'm afraid of everything."
Cleo smiled mysteriously. "Fear is just excitement holding its breath. Come closer."
Lily approached the pool's edge. The water was perfectly still, like a mirror made of liquid silver.
"Watch," Cleo said.
She dipped her paw into the pool, and the water began to glow. Tiny golden bubbles rose to the surface. Cleo caught one bubble on her claw, and it transformed into something remarkable—a sparkling orange gummy shaped like a star.
"This," Cleo said solemnly, "is a courage vitamin. One sip of magical pool water, one wish, and one brave step is all the magic you need."
Lily took the sparkling vitamin. It tasted like sunshine and strawberries.
"Close your eyes," Cleo whispered. "What do you wish for?"
"I wish to believe in myself," Lily said.
The pool water swirled with rainbow colors. "You already have everything you need inside you," Cleo said. "Sometimes we just need a friend to remind us."
The next day, Lily stood at the starting line of the school race. Her heart was still beating fast, but now it felt like excitement instead of fear. She remembered Cleo's words: fear is just excitement holding its breath.
When the whistle blew, Lily didn't think about winning or losing. She thought about the golden sphinx and the magical pool. She thought about friendship and wishes and the courage vitamin that tasted like sunshine.
And something wonderful happened. As she was running, she realized she wasn't afraid anymore. Her feet felt light, her spirit felt strong, and she crossed the finish line with a smile so bright it could have lit up the whole playground.
She didn't come in first place, but she came in something better—she came in as herself, brave and proud.
That evening, Lily ran back to the library garden. But the pool was just a pool, and there was no sign of Cleo the sphinx. Yet in the reflection of the water, Lily saw something that made her smile.
She saw a girl with courage in her eyes and a star-shaped vitamin in her heart, ready for any adventure.
And sometimes, when she looks in mirrors or pools, Lily still sees Cleo's amber eyes twinkling back at her, as if to say: "Remember, little one, the magic was inside you all along."
