The Sphinx's Golden Secret

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially the old stone pond near the rosebushes. One hot summer afternoon, she knelt by the water's edge to watch the orange goldfish dart between lily pads.

Suddenly, the water began to shimmer and sparkle. A beautiful sphinx rose from the pond - not a scary statue, but a magical creature with the body of a lion and the face of a wise woman. Her long, flowing hair gleamed like spun gold in the sunlight.

"Hello, young one," said the sphinx kindly. "I've been waiting for someone with a curious heart."

Lily's eyes widened. "You're real!"

"I am as real as your kindness," the sphinx replied. "I guard this pond and its special goldfish. They grant one wish each day to someone who proves themselves worthy."

"What must I do?" Lily asked eagerly.

The sphinx smiled. "Not a riddle, but a choice. You may wish for anything - treasure, fame, magical powers. But first, you must spend time with my goldfish friends and learn what they value most."

Lily sat by the water for hours. She watched the goldfish swim together, never leaving any fish behind. When one got stuck near a rock, others nudged it free. They shared food and played together.

"They care about each other," Lily realized. "They're happy because they're friends."

The sphinx nodded, her golden hair rippling in the breeze. "What is your wish?"

Lily thought carefully. "I wish that everyone could have such good friends."

The sphinx beamed. The water glowed, and Lily felt warm inside. "Granted," said the sphinx. "You've learned the most valuable secret: friendship is the greatest treasure of all."

That night, Lily made her first true friend at school. And every time she visited grandmother's garden, the sphinx and her goldfish were there, reminding her that magic lives in kindness and friendship.
