The Sphinx's Golden Secret
Lily loved her backyard pool. But she loved her goldfish, Goldie, even more. Every day after school, she'd feed Goldie and watch him swim in his small bowl.
"You should see the big pool," Lily told Goldie. "It's blue like the sky!"
One afternoon, Lily noticed something strange behind the pool. An old stone sphinx sat half-buried in the dirt. It had the body of a lion and the head of a wise woman. Moss covered its face.
Lily dug around it with her hands. Then she saw something shiny—a thick cable running from the sphinx into the ground!
"What are you doing?" a voice said.
Lily jumped. It was Goldie! But how could he talk?
"The sphinx's magic is waking up," Goldie explained. "That cable connects to ancient magic."
Lily carefully pulled the cable. It gleamed like gold! She traced where it led—straight to her pool.
"The pool isn't just water," Goldie said. "It's a gateway!"
That night, when the moon rose, the sphinx's eyes opened. They glowed like fireflies.
"Thank you for finding my cable," the sphinx spoke in a voice like rustling leaves. "For a hundred years, I slept. Now I can grant one wish."
Lily's eyes widened. She could wish for anything! Toys, candy, endless summer!
But she looked at Goldie, swimming happily in his bowl. She thought about how lonely the sphinx must have been.
"I wish," Lily said, "that Goldie could swim in the big pool with me!"
The sphinx smiled. "A wish for friendship is the strongest magic."
Suddenly, Goldie's bowl tipped. He swam through the air like a fish in water and landed in the pool with a splash! He grew bigger and bigger until he was the size of a dolphin!
"Come play!" Goldie said.
Lily jumped in, and they swam together under the moonlight. The sphinx watched, happy to have friends.
Lily learned that magic isn't about making wishes for yourself. It's about sharing joy with the ones you love—even if they're just a small goldfish in a bowl.
