The Sphinx's Golden Riddle
Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every Saturday, he'd grab his glove and run to the old sandlot behind his house. But today was different. As Leo rounded third base, the ground began to glow.
Suddenly, a magnificent creature appeared—a sphinx with emerald feathers and eyes that twinkled like stars. Leo had never seen anything so magical!
"Young one," the sphinx rumbled kindly, "I have guarded this field for a thousand years. Answer my riddle, and you shall discover its secret."
Leo nodded bravely.
"I'm round and bright, I hang from trees, I'm full of juice that makes you sneeze. What am I?"
Leo's eyes lit up. "An orange!"
"Correct!" The sphinx purred. "But here is the truth—the sandlot is magic. Every time you play here with joy in your heart, you make the world a little more wonderful."
She tapped her paw on home plate, and suddenly it turned to pure gold. "This golden base will remind you that the real magic isn't winning. It's playing together, making friends, and having fun."
Leo's teammates arrived, their eyes wide with wonder. The sphinx smiled. "Play ball, young friends. And remember—the orange may be sweet, but friendship is sweeter still."
That day, Leo learned something better than any trophy. Baseball wasn't about being the best. It was about laughter, teamwork, and the magic of playing together under the open sky.
And sometimes, if you look closely at the sandlot on golden afternoons, you can still see the sphinx watching from the outfield, her emerald feathers shimmering with pride.
