The Sphinx's Golden Riddle

Lily loved running through the Whispering Woods, her red hair flying behind her like a flame-colored comet. Every afternoon after school, she would race past the ancient oak tree and leap over babbling brooks, imagining herself as a brave explorer discovering hidden kingdoms.

One Tuesday, while running faster than ever before, Lily stumbled upon something extraordinary — a massive stone sphinx half-buried in a carpet of moss. Its lion body rested peacefully, while its eagle wings were folded neatly at its sides. The sphinx's wise face sparkled with tiny gemstones where eyes should be.

"Hello there, little one," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes and thunder rumbling together. Lily gasped but didn't run away. Something about the magical creature felt kind.

"I've been waiting for a friend," the sphinx continued. "For one hundred years, I've guarded the secret of the Golden Heart — the treasure that grants one wish to anyone kind enough to solve my riddle."

Lily's eyes widened. "A wish? Any wish?"

"Any wish at all," the sphinx nodded. "But you must prove your heart is pure. Here is my riddle: I have cities, but no houses. I have mountains, but no trees. I have water, but no fish. What am I?"

Lily thought hard. She twisted a strand of her hair around her finger. She remembered something from school.

"A map!" she exclaimed. "Maps show cities and mountains and rivers, but they're just drawings!"

The sphinx's gemstone eyes glowed brighter than ever. "Correct! Your mind is quick, but your heart is what truly matters. Why do you want the Golden Heart?"

Lily thought of her grandmother, who couldn't walk very well anymore. "I wish for my grandma to dance again," she said softly.

The sphinx smiled, and suddenly a beautiful golden heart appeared between its paws. "You have proven yourself worthy. Kindness is the greatest magic of all."

That evening, Lily walked home slowly, no longer running. The golden heart pulsed warmly in her pocket, and she knew that some adventures are meant to be savored, not rushed. And somewhere in the Whispering Woods, a sphinx smiled, having found something far more precious than any treasure — a true friend.
