The Sphinx's Golden Riddle

Lily loved playing baseball in her backyard. Every afternoon after school, she'd grab her favorite baseball—it was painted with stars from her dad—and practice pitching. But today, the ball sailed over the fence and landed right in Mrs. Chen's pool next door with a soft splash.

Lily climbed the fence carefully and peered into the sparkling blue water. There, floating beside her baseball, was the most beautiful creature she had ever seen. It had the body of a lion and the head of a wise human, with golden fur that shimmered like sunlight.

"A sphinx!" whispered Lily, remembering from her storybooks.

The sphinx nodded, her eyes twinkling mysteriously. "Young pitcher," she purred, "I will return your baseball if you can solve my riddle. But first, you must share something with me."

Lily's cat, Mochi, suddenly appeared from nowhere and sat beside her, purring loudly. The sphinx smiled and reached into the water, pulling out a glowing papaya that hadn't been there before.

"This papaya holds magic," said the sphinx. "Whoever shares it freely will receive wisdom beyond measure."

Lily thought carefully. She could have eaten the papaya herself, or kept it all for her family. But she looked at Mochi, who had no thumbs to peel fruit, and at the sphinx, who had been swimming alone.

"Let's all share it together," Lily said, splitting the papaya into three pieces. "You, me, and Mochi."

The sphinx's eyes shone bright as stars. "You have solved the riddle without even hearing it! The greatest wisdom is kindness." She tossed the baseball back to Lily, but now it sparkled with magic. "Whenever you play with this ball, you will bring joy to others."

Lily learned that day that the best victories aren't won alone—they're won together, with generosity in your heart and friends by your side.
