The Sphinx's Golden Riddle
Lila pressed her orange against her cheek, feeling its bumpy skin. It was the perfect gift, she thought. Today was the day she would finally visit the magical creature who lived at the top of Misty Mountain.
"Are you sure about this?" asked her best friend Finn, clutching his water bottle tightly. "Nobody ever comes back from the sphinx's cave."
Lila grinned. "That's because they couldn't solve her riddle! But I've been practicing."
The climb was steep. Lightning cracked across the purple sky, making them both jump. Lila loved storms—they made everything feel exciting and possible.
At the mountain's peak, they found it: a cave entrance shimmering with golden light. Inside sat an enormous sphinx, her lion tail twitching curiously. Her eyes sparkled like the lightning outside.
"Welcome, young ones," the sphinx purred. "I am Cleopatra. I have guarded this mountain for three thousand years, waiting for someone clever enough to answer my question."
Lila stepped forward and presented the orange. "This is for you."
Cleopatra's eyes widened. "A gift? In all these years, no one has ever brought me a gift. Everyone comes wanting gold or wishes or power."
"I just wanted to meet you," Lila said simply. "My grandmother told me stories about you. She said you were the kindest, wisest creature in all the land."
Finn added, "And we brought water for your journey, if you ever want to leave this mountain."
The sphinx's fur rippled like waves. She sat up straighter. "Your grandmother was wise indeed. I have been lonely here for so very long. My riddle was never meant to be difficult—it was meant to find hearts like yours."
Cleopatra lowered her magnificent head. "The answer I sought was kindness all along."
She touched her nose to Lila's forehead, then Finn's. A warm, golden glow filled the cave. When it faded, they could understand what she was really saying without words.
"Will you visit us again?" Lila asked.
"Every week," the sphinx promised. "And perhaps someday, I will come down from this mountain and see the world you live in."
That day, Lila and Finn learned something magical: sometimes the bravest adventures are the ones where you bring kindness instead of taking things. And the best treasures aren't gold—they're friends you make along the way.
On the way home, they shared the orange between them in the rain. It was the sweetest thing they had ever tasted.
