The Sphinx's Golden Riddle
Lila loved running through the Whispering Woods, her curly hair bouncing like springs with every step. The sun peeked through the leaves, making dappled patterns on the forest floor. One afternoon, while chasing a blue butterfly deeper into the woods than she'd ever gone before, Lila spotted something extraordinary.
Perched atop a mossy stone was a small sphinx, no bigger than a kitten, with tiny paws and wings that shimmered like opals. Unlike the scary sphinxes from storybooks, this one had kind, twinkling eyes.
"Hello, little one," the sphinx spoke in a voice like wind chimes. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find me."
Lila's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"
"All magical creatures can talk," the sphinx said with a gentle smile. "But not all can listen. I'm stuck here until someone solves my riddle. Will you try?"
Lila nodded eagerly. The sphinx cleared its tiny throat and said, "I have feet but cannot walk. I have hair but cannot think. What am I?"
Lila thought hard. She paced back and forth, running through ideas in her mind. "Feet but can't walk... hair but can't think..." She looked down at the ground and saw fallen pinecones everywhere. Suddenly, it clicked!
"A pinecone!" Lila exclaimed. "It has little feet at the bottom, but it can't walk. It has hair-like scales, but it can't think!"
The sphinx's wings fluttered with joy. "Correct!" Sparkles surrounded the tiny creature, and it grew to the size of a large dog. "You've freed me! For your kindness and cleverness, I will grant you one wish."
Lila thought carefully. She could wish for anything—treasure, magic powers, endless candy. But then she remembered her grandmother, who missed being able to visit the woods because she couldn't walk far anymore.
"I wish my grandmother could come here and see all the beautiful trees," Lila said.
The sphinx smiled, and golden dust swirled around them. "A wish that comes from kindness is the most powerful magic of all."
From that day on, whenever Lila visited the woods, her grandmother was there waiting, sitting on a magical bench that appeared just for her. And sometimes, if they were lucky, they'd see the sphinx resting on a nearby branch, its opal wings glittering in the sunlight, reminding them that the best magic is the kind you share with someone you love.
