The Sphinx's Golden Pool

Lily discovered the secret on a Tuesday afternoon, when the summer heat made everything shimmer like honey. Behind the old oak tree in her grandmother's garden, there was a wooden gate she'd never noticed before. Inside waited the most beautiful pool she had ever seen.

The water wasn't blue like regular pools. It was the color of orange sunset, glowing softly as if someone had dropped a hundred tiny suns beneath the surface. Lily had never gone swimming without her floaties, but something about this magical pool made her feel brave.

"You're wondering about the water, aren't you?"

Lily jumped! Sitting on a stone bench was the most unusual creature she'd ever seen. It had the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle, and a wise, friendly face. A sphinx! Just like in her storybooks, but this one had kind eyes that crinkled when it smiled.

"I'm Sophie," the sphinx said. "And this is the Courage Pool. The water turns orange whenever someone is about to do something brave."

Lily's heart thumped. "But I don't know how to swim without help."

"That's why it's glowing!" Sophie's wings fluttered excitedly. "Every time you try something new, something scary, something brave — the pool celebrates. Watch this!" The sphinx touched the water with one claw, and ripples of gold spread outward like tiny shooting stars.

"Will you stay with me?" Lily asked, stepping closer to the edge.

"Always," Sophie promised. "Brave friends stick together."

Lily took a deep breath and stepped into the orange water. It felt like a warm hug. With Sophie encouraging her from the edge, she kicked her legs and moved her arms. She was swimming! Really and truly swimming!

"You did it!" Sophie cheered, and the pool sparkled even brighter.

They spent the whole afternoon together. Lily swam while Sophie told wonderful stories about ancient Egypt and magical adventures. When the sun began to set, the pool turned a soft purple.

"Come back tomorrow," Sophie said. "There's always more bravery to find."

Lily hugged the sphinx's warm neck. "Thank you for helping me be brave."

"You were always brave," Sophie whispered. "You just needed to believe in yourself."

As Lily walked home, she knew she would never be afraid of trying new things again. Because somewhere, in a secret garden, an orange-glowing pool and a friendly sphinx were waiting — and she had found courage within herself all along.
