The Sphinx's Golden Papaya

Lila loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially on warm afternoons when the sun painted everything golden. Today, she discovered something extraordinary behind the tangled vines of the old papaya tree.

A creature sat curled beneath the broad leaves — not quite a lion, not quite a person, but magnificent with gentle golden eyes and a smile like sunshine. It was a sphinx!

"Hello, little one," the sphinx said, her voice sounding like wind chimes. "I've been waiting for someone brave enough to find me."

Lila's eyes widened. "You're real!" she gasped.

"Very real," the sphinx nodded. "And I have a problem. My favorite papaya — the magical golden one that grants one special wish — is growing at the very top of this tree, and I cannot climb. Sphinxes are wise, but we're not good climbers."

The highest papaya glowed like a tiny sun, its skin shimmering with rainbow colors.

"I could climb it!" Lila offered, though her heart raced. She had never climbed so high.

"But first," the sphinx said softly, "you must answer my riddle: What grows stronger when you share it?"

Lila thought hard. She thought about sharing toys with her brother, sharing stories with friends, sharing cookies...

"Friendship!" she exclaimed. "And love!"

The sphinx beamed. "Correct!" She tapped Lila's shoulder with her paw. "And now you'll find something special — you can swim through the air as easily as water."

Lila reached up and indeed began swimming upward, her arms pulling through the warm air as if it were water. She swam higher and higher, past leaves and branches, until she reached the glowing papaya.

When she plucked it, the sphinx called up, "Make your wish, dear heart!"

Lila thought carefully. She could wish for anything — toys, adventures, magic powers. But looking at the sphinx's lonely smile, she knew.

"I wish that you'll always have a friend to share your garden with."

The papaya burst into golden sparkles that swirled around them both. From that day on, Lila visited her sphinx friend every afternoon, and they shared stories, laughter, and sweet papaya under the golden sun.

For the best wishes, Lila learned, are the ones that make others happy too.
