The Sphinx's Golden Lock
Lila loved two things more than anything else in the world: swimming in the silver lake behind her house and running through the meadow of purple flowers. Every morning, she would jump into the cool water, her long brown hair floating around her like seaweed. Then she would run so fast her hair streamed behind her like a chocolate river.
One sunny afternoon, while Lila was drying off by the lake, she heard a soft rumbling sound. Curious, she followed the noise behind the old willow tree. There, resting on a mossy rock, was a golden sphinx!
The sphinx had the body of a lion and the face of a wise woman. But something was wrong. The sphinx's beautiful golden hair was all tangled and knotted, twisted around branches and leaves.
"Oh dear," the sphinx sighed. "I was chasing a butterfly through the forest, and my hair got caught in everything. Can you help me?"
Lila nodded eagerly. She was good at untangling things—her own hair often got messy when she was swimming.
"I will help you!" Lila said. "But first, you must promise me something."
"Anything!" said the sphinx gratefully.
"Teach me how to run as fast as you, and swim as gracefully as you fly."
The sphinx smiled, her eyes twinkling like stars. "I cannot swim like you do, little one. But I can teach you how to run with the wind. And perhaps, when we are done, you can teach me how to swim in your silver lake."
Lila spent the afternoon carefully untangling the sphinx's golden hair, working through each knot with gentle fingers. When she finished, the sphinx's hair shone brighter than the sun.
"Thank you, Lila," the sphinx said. "You have shown me great kindness. Now, close your eyes."
Lila closed her eyes, and suddenly she felt lighter than air. When she opened them, she was running so fast that the trees blurred past her. The sphinx had given her a gift—the speed of the wind!
Every day after that, Lila would swim in the lake and race the wind across the meadow. And sometimes, if she looked very carefully, she could see the golden sphinx watching her from behind the willow tree, its beautiful hair shining in the sunlight.
Lila learned that helping others brings magic into your life. And the sphinx learned that even the mightiest creatures sometimes need a little help from the smallest friends.
