The Sphinx's Golden Gift

Lily loved exploring her grandmother's garden, especially on hot summer days. The garden was full of secrets – whispering willow trees, flowers that seemed to bloom only when she smiled, and a mysterious stone pool at the far end, hidden behind a wall of ivy.

One afternoon, while chasing a bright orange butterfly, Lily pushed through the ivy and discovered something amazing. Around the ancient pool sat a stone sphinx, its lion body resting on powerful paws, its human face wise and kind. Unlike the scary sphinxes in her storybooks, this one had gentle eyes that seemed to sparkle like sunshine on water.

"Hello, little one," the sphinx spoke, its voice sounding like wind chimes. "I've been waiting for someone with a brave heart."

Lily's eyes went wide. "You can talk?"

"I can do many things," the sphinx rumbled softly. "For fifty years, I've guarded this magical pool. But I'm lonely. Will you be my friend?"

Lily nodded eagerly. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the orange she'd saved from lunch. "Would you like this? My grandmother says oranges taste like sunshine."

The sphinx's eyes twinkled. "A perfect gift!" The sphinx touched the orange with one stone paw, and suddenly it began to glow. The pool's water rippled and changed color, turning the most beautiful orange Lily had ever seen – like sunset, like marigolds, like magic itself.

"Friendship is the greatest magic," the sphinx said. "Because you shared without hesitation, this pool will now grant one wish to anyone who comes here with a pure heart."

Lily thought carefully. "I wish that everyone who visits this garden will find a friend."

The pool swirled with golden light, and throughout the garden, flowers bloomed extra bright, as if nodding in agreement.

"A wise wish," the sphinx purred. "Come back anytime, my friend. The pool and I will always be here."

That night, Lily fell asleep dreaming of sphinxes and orange pools, knowing that the best magic isn't found in wishes – it's found in friendship and the courage to be kind.
