The Sphinx's Golden Game
Lily's cat, Mittens, sat by the garden gate, meowing at something in the bushes. A little fox with golden-red fur peeked out, twitching his nose.
"Hello!" said Lily, kneeling down. "What's your name?"
"I'm Finnegan," the fox replied softly. "And I've found something magical!"
Finnegan led Lily and Mittens through the forest to a clearing they'd never seen before. In the center stood an ancient stone sphinx with emerald eyes. Around her grew a single papaya tree with glowing orange fruit.
"Welcome, young friends," the sphinx rumbled kindly. "I've waited fifty years for someone brave enough to play my game."
She waved her paw, and a small padel racquet appeared in Lily's hands. The sphinx pointed to the papaya tree. "Hit the magical fruit against the stone wall. If you can keep it in the air ten times, you'll win one wish."
Lily had never played padel before, but Mittens and Finnegan cheered her on. She swung the racquet—*whoosh!* The papaya bounced against the wall and back.
One... two... three...
The papaya glowed brighter with each hit. Lily's arms grew tired, but she didn't give up. Seven... eight... nine...
*Smack!* The tenth hit!
The sphinx smiled, and her emerald eyes sparkled. "You did it! What's your wish?"
Lily looked at Finnegan and Mittens. "I wish we could always be friends and have adventures together."
The sphinx nodded approvingly. "A wise wish. True friendship is the greatest magic of all."
From that day on, every full moon, Lily, Mittens, and Finnegan returned to the sphinx's clearing. They'd play padel with the magical papaya, laughing under the stars, forever grateful for the day a cat, a fox, and a little girl discovered that the best wishes are the ones you share with friends.
