The Sphinx's Golden Friend

Lily loved the old pool behind her grandmother's house. It wasn't like regular swimming pools — this one was ancient, with stones carved in mysterious patterns. Her grandmother called it the Pool of Dreams.

One hot summer afternoon, Lily sat by the water's edge, dangling her feet. Suddenly, the water shimmered like liquid sunshine. A tiny goldfish with scales like real gold swam right up to her toes.

Hello, friend! said the goldfish.

Lily gasped. You can talk?

I'm not just any goldfish, the fish said proudly. I'm the Golden Friend, keeper of the pool's magic. But I need your help!

The water rippled again, and a stone statue began to rise from the middle of the pool. It was a sphinx — a lion with a human face, carved from sparkling blue stone.

The Sphinx has been sleeping for one hundred years, the goldfish explained. She guards the most special vitamin in the world — the Vitamin of Kindness. But someone has stolen it!

Lily's eyes widened. Who would take a vitamin?

A grouchy old troll who lives in the caves, said a gentle voice. The sphinx had awakened! Her eyes glowed warm amber, like honey in sunlight. Without the Vitamin of Kindness, people in the village forget to be nice to each other.

We have to help! Lily declared.

The sphinx smiled. Brave child, you and your golden friend must work together. The troll's weakness is kindness itself.

Lily and the goldfish swam through magical underwater tunnels that led to the troll's cave. There they found him — a grumpy creature clutching a glowing bottle.

Give it back! Lily said. But then she remembered the sphinx's words. Instead of fighting, she did something unexpected.

Mr. Troll, she said softly, you look very lonely. Would you like a friend?

The troll looked surprised. No one had ever offered him friendship before. His grumpy expression softened. The goldfish swam up and nuzzled his hand. The troll began to cry — not mean tears, but lonely ones that made the air sparkle.

I just wanted someone to notice me, the troll sniffled.

Lily gave him a hug. Now you have two friends — me and the goldfish.

The troll returned the Vitamin of Kindness, and the sphinx placed it back in its special place in the pool. From that day on, the troll became the pool's new guardian, and Lily visited every summer with her grandmother.

The real magic wasn't in the vitamin at all. It was in friendship, kindness, and believing that everyone deserves a friend.
