The Sphinx's Golden Friend

In the backyard of old Mrs. Willow's house, there was a pond that nobody noticed except young Lily. One hot summer afternoon, Lily sat by the water's edge, watching the tiny ripples dance across the surface. She loved how the water sparkled like diamonds in the sunlight.

Suddenly, the water began to glow. A beautiful golden goldfish popped its head above the surface and spoke! "Hello, Lily! I've been waiting for someone kind like you."

Lily rubbed her eyes. "You can talk?"

The goldfish swam closer. "My name is Finley, and I'm not just any goldfish. I'm the Keeper of Riddles, friend to the Sphinx of the Pond."

From behind a large weeping willow tree, a magnificent creature emerged. It had the body of a lion, the wings of an eagle, and a wise human face. A sphinx!

"I am Seraphina," the sphinx said with a voice like gentle wind chimes. "For one hundred years, Finley and I have guarded this magical water. It can heal any sad heart and answer any question — but only for those who prove themselves worthy."

Lily's eyes grew wide. "What do I need to do?"

Seraphina smiled. "Solve my riddle: I have cities, but no houses. I have mountains, but no trees. I have water, but no fish. What am I?"

Lily thought carefully. She remembered her geography book from school. "A map!"

"Correct!" Finley splashed joyfully. "You are wise and kind. The magical water is yours to share."

From that day on, Lily visited her special friends every afternoon. She learned that true wisdom comes from listening, true magic lives in kindness, and the best adventures are the ones you share with friends — even if one is a talking goldfish and the other is a sphinx!
