The Sphinx's Golden Friend

Lily had the most wild and tangled hair in all of Willowbrook Village. Her brown curls sprang in every direction, full of secrets and stories. One afternoon, while exploring the forest, she discovered something amazing — an old stone sphinx sitting beside a tiny pond.

The sphinx had sad emerald eyes and wings tucked against her sides. "Hello," said Lily bravely. "Why are you so sad?"

"I've been alone for three hundred years," the sphinx sighed. "No one ever stops to talk. They're too afraid of my riddles."

Lily sat down and patted her own crazy hair. "I'm not afraid of riddles. My hair gets tangled in knots every morning, and that's a puzzle I can't solve either!"

The sphinx smiled for the first time in centuries. Just then, something splashed in the pond. A tiny goldfish popped to the surface, its scales shimmering like orange and gold jewels.

"Hello!" bubbled the goldfish. "I'm Finn! I've lived in this pond for forever, and I've never seen the sphinx smile!"

"I'm Lily," she laughed. "And this is... what's your name?"

"Saphira," said the sphinx softly.

From that day on, Lily visited every afternoon. She would bring stories from the village, Saphira would share ancient wisdom, and Finn would perform splashy jumps just to make them laugh. Lily's wild hair became a perfect cushion for Saphira to rest her stone head upon, and Finn would swim circles around them, creating tiny rainbows in the sunlight.

"You know," Saphira said one day, "I thought I needed someone important to break my loneliness spell. But all I really needed was friends who weren't afraid to say hello."

Lily learned that friendship doesn't care about appearances — whether you have wild hair, stone scales, or golden fins. The best friends are simply the ones who show up.

And sometimes, the most magical adventures start with being brave enough to say hello to someone who needs a friend.
