The Sphinx's Golden Friend
Leo loved spending summer days at the old pond behind his house. The water shimmered like liquid diamonds, and he could spend hours swimming in its cool embrace.
One afternoon, while floating on his back watching fluffy clouds drift by, something extraordinary happened. A tiny goldfish popped its head above the surface.
'Hello there!' said the goldfish. 'My name is Finn.'
Leo rubbed his eyes. A talking goldfish? He must be dreaming!
'You're not dreaming,' Finn giggled, as if reading Leo's thoughts. 'I'm special. And I need your help.'
Finn explained that a magical sphinx lived at the bottom of the pond, guarding a secret treasure. But the sphinx was lonely because everyone was too afraid to visit. 'Will you be my friend and come meet her?' Finn asked hopefully.
Leo's heart swelled. No one had ever asked him to go on an adventure before. 'Yes!' he exclaimed.
'Take a deep breath and hold my fin,' said Finn. 'We're going swimming!'
Together they dove deep into the crystal-clear water. Past swaying reeds and curious minnows, down to where the water turned deep blue. There, resting on a bed of pearls, sat the most beautiful sphinx Leo had ever seen. Her scales sparkled like rainbows, and her eyes held the wisdom of a thousand years.
'A visitor!' the sphinx rumbled softly. 'And a friend for Finn. How wonderful.'
Leo realized the sphinx wasn't scary at all. She was just lonely, like he used to be before he moved to this town.
'My treasure,' the sphinx said, smiling, 'is not gold or jewels. It's friendship. And now I have two friends—Finn, and you.'
Leo swam back to the surface with the biggest smile. He had found something better than treasure: a goldfish friend and a sphinx who needed friendship as much as he did.
Every day that summer, Leo went swimming with Finn. Sometimes they visited the sphinx, who told amazing stories. Other times they just splashed and played, the best of friends doing what friends do best—being together.
