The Sphinx's Golden Friend
Lily loved visiting her grandmother's attic. It smelled like old books and rainbows. One rainy afternoon, she found something she'd never seen before—a tiny golden door hidden behind a stack of dusty quilts.
When Lily crawled through, she tumbled into a world made entirely of sparkles. In the center stood a magnificent creature with the body of a lion and the head of a wise human. It was a sphinx!
"Welcome, small one," the sphinx rumbled gently. "I am Cleo, and I guard the most precious treasure in all the land."
Lily's eyes grew wide. "Treasure? Is it gold? Jewels?"
Cleo shook her magnificent head. "Something far more valuable. Follow me."
They walked through a garden where flowers sang soft lullabies, until they reached a crystal pond. Inside swam the most beautiful goldfish Lily had ever seen. Their scales shimmered like tiny suns, and when they swam, they left trails of rainbow bubbles.
"These aren't ordinary fish," Cleo explained sadly. "They are Star-Goldfish. They grant wishes to those with pure hearts. But lately, they've been losing their sparkle. Without their magic, they can't grant wishes anymore."
Lily's grandmother had given her something special that morning—a bottle of shiny orange drops. "Star-Vitamin," she'd called it. "For extra adventures."
"Wait!" Lily cried. "I have something that might help!"
She poured one drop of the magical vitamin into the pond. The water began to glow. Instantly, the goldfish started darting joyfully, their scales burning brighter than ever. One particularly brave fish swam to the surface and blew a bubble that popped into tiny letters: THANK YOU.
"You saved them!" Cleo said, nuzzling Lily gratefully. "For your kindness, you may make one wish."
Lily thought carefully. She could wish for anything—to fly, to be a princess, for a million toys. But she looked at Cleo, who had guarded these fish alone for hundreds of years.
"I wish," Lily said, "that you had a friend to keep you company."
The sphinx's eyes filled with happy tears. From that day on, Lily visited her magical friend every week. And sometimes, if she was very lucky, the Star-Goldfish would grant her small wishes—like finding lost homework or making rainy days perfect for reading.
Lily learned that the best wishes aren't the ones you make for yourself. They're the ones you make for others.
