The Sphinx's Golden Challenge

In Sunnyville Park, best friends Lily, Ben, and Mia played padel every afternoon after school. But today felt different. The playground shimmered with strange sparkles.

"Look at the fountain!" Lily pointed.

A golden goldfish popped up wearing a tiny crown! "The Sphinx challenges you!" the fish announced in a bubbly voice. "I'm Finneus, messenger to Sparkle the Sphinx, guardian of magical playgrounds."

Suddenly, the stone Sphinx transformed into a magnificent creature with rainbow feathers. She stretched her wings and smiled warmly.

"I've watched you play," Sparkle purred. "Can you master my magical games? Win, and you'll each receive one wish."

The first game appeared instantly: a floating baseball diamond with glowing star-balls. Ben, the baseball expert, jumped to catch them, but they burst into bubbles if held too long. Mia discovered the trick—bounce then catch. She scored three points before any popped!

"One point!" Sparkle clapped.

For round two, their padel court transformed. The glass walls showed reflections of their dreams—Ben as astronaut, Mia as veterinarian, Lily as artist painting with starlight. The ball became a tiny comet leaving rainbow trails.

Lily noticed something: "When the comet shows our dreams, it slows down! Focus on what you love!"

Together they kept the magical comet alive, earning their second point.

"Final challenge," Finneus announced, growing to human size. "Three doors appear. Choose together."

The doors revealed: endless candy and games, mountains of toys, or a misty path showing their three silhouettes walking hand in hand.

Without speaking, all three chose the third door.

It opened to show their future selves—still best friends, still playing together.

"You passed not because you were fastest," Sparkle said, "but because you never left anyone behind."

Each child received a magical gift: Lily's paintbrush made drawings come alive, Ben's star-baseball always returned when thrown, and Mia's golden whistle called animals to help anyone in need.

"Whenever you play with friendship," Sparkle promised, "I'm watching. Look for Finneus in fountains everywhere!"

As the Sphinx returned to statue form, the friends made a pact to include everyone in their games. And sometimes, during an especially good play, they'd spot a tiny goldfish leaping from the fountain, crown glittering, before splashing down with a wink.

Some magic is real—you just have to believe.
