The Sphinx's Golden Cable
Lila loved running through the old library after school. Her sneakers would squeak on the polished floors, and she'd pretend she was racing through enchanted castles.
One Tuesday, while playing her favorite game of Freeze Tag among the bookshelves, Lila noticed something strange. A dusty bronze statue she'd walked past a hundred times now had glowing purple eyes. Lila froze — but not because she'd been tagged.
The sphinx stretched its stone paws and yawned, sending little puffs of glitter into the air. "Finally, someone noticed me!" said the sphinx in a voice like chimes. "I've been stuck here for eighty years waiting for a curious child."
Lila's eyes widened. "You're real?"
"Very real, and very stuck," the sphinx explained sadly. "My magic cable broke during a cleaning mishap in 1944. Without it, I can't return to the Story Kingdom where all mythical creatures live."
The sphinx pointed to a golden cable — thick as Lila's wrist and shimmering with tiny stars — that dangled sadly from the ceiling, its tip just out of reach.
"What if I spy something to help?" Lila offered. She was excellent at finding lost things. She'd once found her brother's missing hamster behind the cereal boxes.
Lila scanned the room carefully. There! Behind a potted plant, she spotted the other end of the golden cable, coiled like a sleeping snake. But how would she reach it? It was high on a shelf marked "DO NOT CLIMB."
The sphinx winked. "I think you're clever enough to figure that out."
Lila grabbed the rolling ladder, pushed it close, and carefully climbed up. Her fingers closed around the glowing cable, and suddenly she felt lighter — like she could fly.
She brought the cable ends together. They snapped together with a happy ZING!
"Thank you, clever child!" The sphinx beamed. "You've reminded me that the best magic comes from kindness and curiosity, not just ancient enchantments."
The sphinx offered Lila a ride to the Story Kingdom, but she shook her head. "I need to get home for dinner. But I'll visit you every Tuesday!"
"Deal," said the sphinx. "And bring friends. Story-lovers are always welcome here."
Now Lila runs to the library every week, excited for her next adventure with her magical friend. Sometimes the best discoveries happen when you're curious enough to look closely at things everyone else walks past.
