The Sphinx's Golden Cable
Lily loved exploring her grandmother's dusty attic. Every Saturday, she climbed the creaky stairs and discovered treasures: old photographs, strange boxes, and forgotten toys. But today was different.
Behind a stack of trunks, something glimmered. A small golden sphinx sat on a velvet pillow, no bigger than a kitten. But when Lily stepped closer, the sphinx opened its emerald eyes and stretched its stone wings.
"Hello, young friend," the sphinx said in a voice like wind chimes. "I've been waiting for you."
Lily gasped. "You can talk?"
"Magical creatures always can," the sphinx replied with a wink. "My name is Zari. I come from the Kingdom Between Worlds, but I'm stuck here. My cable broke during a storm last night."
She pointed to a shimmering golden cable that lay broken on the floor. It pulsed with light, like a river of stars.
"What does it do?" Lily asked.
"It connects our worlds," Zari explained sadly. "Without it, I can never return home."
Lily's heart ached. She knew exactly how to help. She grabbed her padel racket from her sports bag—the one with neon pink strings she used for weekend tournaments with her best friend Mia.
"I have an idea!" Lily said. "We need to tie the cable ends together, but I can't reach high enough."
"Climb on my back," Zari said. "I may be small, but I'm strong."
Lily carefully climbed onto the sphinx's smooth stone back. Zari flew gracefully to the attic's highest beam, carrying Lily as if she weighed nothing. Using her padel racket like an extension of her arm, Lily reached up and looped the golden cable around the wooden beam, pulling the broken ends together.
The cable glowed brighter and brighter, filling the attic with warm golden light.
"Thank you, Lily," Zari said, nuzzling her hand. "You used what you had in creative ways. True magic comes from kindness and quick thinking."
She pressed a tiny golden star into Lily's palm. "Whenever you need me, hold this and think of our adventure."
With a sparkle, Zari flew through the cable and vanished.
Lily climbed down the attic stairs, her heart full of wonder. That night, she taped the golden star above her bed. Sometimes, she whispered to it, and somewhere far away, she imagined the sphinx listening.
And every weekend when she played padel with Mia, Lily smiled, remembering that the best magic comes from helping others—even with the most ordinary things.
