The Sphinx's Golden Baseball

Lily loved playing baseball in her backyard. Her favorite part was running so fast her messy hair flew behind her like a superhero cape. One sunny afternoon, her ball sailed over the fence and landed in the mysterious garden next door.

She crept through the bushes and found herself face-to-face with an enormous stone sphinx! The creature had kind eyes and a baseball-sized ruby embedded in its forehead.

"Hello, little one," the sphinx rumbled softly. "I've waited fifty years for someone brave enough to find my treasure."

Lily's eyes widened. "Treasure?"

"Not gold or jewels," the sphinx said. "I guard the Magic Vitamin of Courage. It helps children face their fears."

The sphinx explained that long ago, he'd been a lonely guardian who forgot his purpose. Then a brave boy played baseball nearby every day, reminding him how to be brave. Now he needed someone new to inherit the vitamin.

"But you must prove yourself first," the sphinx said. "Catch my magic baseball three times."

He tossed a glowing ball that zigzagged like a firefly. Lily dove and rolled, her hair tangling with leaves. First catch! Second catch! On the third toss, the ball spun toward a prickly bush. Lily didn't hesitate.

"Ouch!" she said, grabbing it despite the thorns.

"Perfect!" The sphinx laughed. "You faced fear even when it hurt. That's true courage."

He pressed the ruby into a tiny orange tablet. "The Magic Vitamin of Courage. Use it whenever you're scared."

Lily took it home. That night, she swallowed the vitamin before her school presentation. Her heart still raced, but she stood tall, spoke clearly, and smiled.

Later she realized: the vitamin wasn't magic at all. SHE was the brave one. The sphinx had simply helped her believe in herself.

Every time Lily faced something scary, she remembered: true courage isn't about not being afraid. It's about being afraid and doing it anyway—just like catching a magic baseball from a sphinx.
