The Sphinx's Garden of Friends
Lily's golden retriever, Max, wagged his tail so hard his whole body wiggled. Every Saturday, they explored the woods behind their house. But today was different. Today, the forest seemed to shimmer.
"What's that, boy?" Lily whispered, following Max as he bounded toward a stone archway she'd never seen before. Beyond it stood a magnificent sphinx, its lion body resting peacefully while wise eyes watched them approach.
"Welcome, young one," the sphinx spoke, its voice like wind through ancient trees. "I have waited many years for someone with a heart brave enough to visit."
Max barked happily, trotting right up to the sphinx's giant paws.
"I am not frightening," the sphinx rumbled softly. "I am guardian of this magical garden, where friends come in unexpected forms."
Suddenly, a zombie shambled out from behind a crystal fountain. Lily gasped—but then looked closer. The zombie wasn't scary at all. It was made of friendly forest creatures! A squirrel head, rabbit body, and raccoon tail, all stitched together with golden threads that glowed with warmth.
"This is Zombi," the sphinx explained. "A creature who wanted to be many friends at once. Now he never has to be lonely."
A gentle black bull emerged from the flowers, his silver horns polished to a shine. "And this is Ferdinand. He may look fierce, but he protects the smaller creatures."
From the bushes peeked a clever little fox. "I'm Rusty!" she chirped. "The sphinx saved me when I was lost. Now I help others find their way here."
Lily realized something wonderful. "Your garden is for everyone who needs a friend!"
The sphinx nodded. "True friendship sees with the heart, not the eyes. A zombie can be gentle. A bull can be kind. And a fox can be loyal. What matters is how we treat each other."
Max curled up beside Zombi, who patted his head with a soft paw. Ferdinand lowered his massive head so Lily could pet his nose. Rusty the fox danced around them all, her tail fluffy with joy.
"Come back anytime," the sphinx said as the sun began to set. "This garden will always be here for those who believe in magic."
Lily hugged Max, who smelled like adventure. She couldn't wait to return to the most wonderful place she'd ever found—where friends came in all shapes and sizes, and kindness was the greatest magic of all.
