The Sphinx's Garden Friend
Lily pressed her nose against the windowpane, watching lightning crackle across the sky like bolts of white lace. Thunder rumbled, making the house shake gently. Most children were scared of storms, but Lily loved them. They made her feel like anything could happen.
During a flash so bright it turned night into day, Lily spotted something glowing in her backyard. She grabbed her yellow raincoat and boots and crept outside.
There, beneath the old oak tree, sat a sphinx—not made of stone, but real! Its fur was golden like sunshine, and its wings shimmered with rainbow colors. But the sphinx looked sad.
"Oh no!" Lily cried. "What's wrong?"
The sphinx looked up with wise, worried eyes. "My garden!" she said. "I planted magical spinach that only grows during lightning storms, but the wind knocked down the fence protecting it. Now the rabbits will eat everything before it can bloom!"
Lily's heart went out to the lonely sphinx. "I'll help!"
Together they worked in the rain, lifting fence pieces and securing them around the tiny green plants. With each bolt of lightning, the spinach leaves glowed brighter and grew taller. When they finished, the sphinx smiled.
"You've been a true friend," she said, pulling one leaf from the plant. "This spinach gives courage to anyone who eats it. But I think you already have plenty!"
Lily beamed, realizing she had been brave enough to help a magical creature.
"Come visit anytime," the sphinx said. "Especially during storms!"
As Lily snuggled back into bed, she knew the next lightning storm would bring another adventure with her new friend. Sometimes the best magic comes from helping others—and finding friendship in unexpected places.
