The Sphinx's First Flight

Leo was a small sphinx with golden fur and tiny wings that tucked close to his sides. Unlike the ancient sphinxes who guarded desert temples with serious faces, Leo was young and curious. He loved running across the warm desert sand, his paws thumping happily.

But Leo had a secret: he was afraid to fly.

Every morning, he watched the older sphinxes soaring through orange skies, their wings spreading wide like canvas sails. When they asked him to join, Leo would shake his head and keep running instead.

"I'm better on the ground," he said.

One evening, Leo rested beneath a palm tree at the edge of the Great Oasis. The tree's leaves swished gently in the breeze, and clear water lapped at the shore nearby. This was Leo's favorite place to think.

"Why don't you fly?" asked Zara, a tiny lizard who lived in the palm tree above.

"What if I fall?" Leo whispered, staring at his reflection in the water. "What if everyone laughs?"

Suddenly, dark clouds gathered overhead. Lightning flashed across the sky in purple streaks, and rain began to fall—something that almost never happened in the desert. The oasis water started rising, faster and faster.

"My home!" Zara cried from her palm tree, which was beginning to tilt as the ground softened.

Leo looked up. Zara's family was trapped in the swaying tree.

Without thinking, Leo spread his wings. They felt strong and sure, not scary at all. He flapped once, twice, and lifted into the stormy air.

Wind pushed against him, but Leo kept going. He grabbed Zara's family in his gentle paws, one by one, carrying them to higher ground where the water couldn't reach.

The storm passed quickly, as desert rains always do. When the sun returned, Leo landed softly beside the water. The older sphinxes gathered around, amazed.

"You flew!" they said.

Leo looked at his wings, then at Zara and her family, safe and dry. "I guess I did."

Sometimes the bravest things happen when we stop thinking and just help our friends. That day, Leo learned that courage isn't about not being afraid—it's about doing what needs to be done, even when you are scared.

And from that day on, the sphinx who loved running could also be found soaring through the orange desert sky, wings spread wide, ready for his next adventure.
