The Sphinx's Final Lap
Maya's lungs burned like she'd inhaled fire as she rounded the fourth lap, the regional championship track blurring beneath her sneakers. Being the new girl at Oak Ridge High was like being dropped into an obstacle course blindfolded—every day was a different test, and she was barely passing.
That's when she saw it: between the portable classrooms and the old gym, someone had spray-painted a massive sphinx across the brick wall. The riddle monster's eyes followed her as she ran, and she could practically hear it whispering: *What walks on four legs in the morning, two at noon, and three in the evening?*
The answer was *humans*, but Maya was pretty sure her riddle was more like: *What walks into high school convinced she'll be invisible, then somehow ends up the subject of everyone's opinions?*
"She's so full of bull," she'd heard Jessica say yesterday in the locker room. "Nobody transfers schools three times junior year unless they're running from something."
Maya *was* running from something—or someone. Her dad's job had them moving constantly, and she'd stopped trying to make real connections years ago. It was easier that way. Less to lose.
But then she'd stupidly joined track, and now here she was, running toward something instead of away: the state finals, a team that actually seemed to like her, and maybe—just maybe—a reason to stay put.
Her legs threatened to give out. Her dad's voice echoed in her head: *You gotta bear down, Maya. Push through the wall. That's where champions are made.*
The sphinx grinned at her from the wall. Somewhere between her sophomore and junior year, between three different high schools in three different states, she'd figured out the real riddle: *What gets stronger every time you have to start over?*
She crossed the finish line, collapsing onto the grass as her teammates rushed over. From the ground, looking up at the sky, she realized she didn't have the answer yet.
But for the first time, she wanted to find out.
