The Sphinx's Final Inning

Elena smoothed her skirt in the mirrored lobby of Meridian Corp, her heart pounding like a **baseball** against a catcher's mitt. She'd played center field in college, and the same nervous energy that preceded every pitch now flooded her veins. Only this time, the stakes weren't a game—they were her career, maybe her freedom.

The elevator dinged on the forty-second floor. Marcus—the man everyone called **Bear** for his imposing frame and surprisingly gentle demeanor—waited by the glass doors to the executive suite. He'd recruited her three months ago with vague promises about corporate restructuring and competitive intelligence.

"You ready?" he asked, his voice a gravelly rumble.

Elena nodded, though her hands trembled slightly. She wasn't a **spy**. She was an analyst, a numbers person. But Marcus had insisted her access to Meridian's financial systems made her perfect for what he called "protecting interests." She'd believed him, believed the drilling company she worked for needed to defend against hostile takeovers.

Now she knew better.

Inside the CEO's office, a bronze **sphinx** crouched on the mahogany desk—its wings spread, human face staring blankly ahead, riddle frozen in stone. Behind it sat Helena Vance, Meridian's founder, whose documents Elena had been copying for weeks.

"Sit," Vance said, gesturing to the leather chair. "Marcus tells me you've had second thoughts about our arrangement."

Elena's throat tightened. "I never agreed to steal trade secrets. Marcus said it was defensive—"

"Industrial espionage is rarely defense, my dear." Vance's expression softened, almost motherly. "But Marcus has his own agenda. He's been selling our drilling technology to competitors. You were his unwitting courier."

The room spun. Elena thought about her father—how he'd taken the fall for his boss's embezzlement, spent five years in prison. She'd sworn she'd never be someone's fall guy.

"I have copies of everything," she said, her voice steady. "Marcus's instructions, the transfers. I haven't sent them to anyone yet."

Vance's smile didn't reach her eyes. "And what do you want?"

"Immunity. Marcus arrested. And my name cleared."

Outside, rain began to fall against the glass. Elena thought about baseball, about how the best hitters weren't the ones who swung for every pitch—they waited for the right one. This was hers.

"Deal," Vance said. "But Marcus won't go quietly. He's a dangerous animal when cornered."

**Bear** when cornered, Elena thought, and almost smiled. Some riddles, you solved alone. Some, you needed a team for. And some sphinxes kept their secrets forever—unless you were willing to risk everything to hear the truth.
