The Sphinx's Dusty Friend

Lily's pet goldfish, Finneus, did the most extraordinary thing one Tuesday evening. He blew a bubble that didn't pop. Instead, it grew larger and larger until it wrapped around Lily's entire bed, lifting her gently into the starry sky.

"We're going on an adventure!" Finneus cheered, swimming through the air beside her. "I've made a new friend, and I want you to meet him."

The bubble carried them across oceans and mountains until it floated down into a golden desert. There, resting against an ancient pyramid, sat a magnificent Sphinx with emerald eyes and wings like sunset clouds.

"Hello," the Sphinx rumbled softly. "I'm Cleo. Finneus told me you're good at making friends."

"I try my best," Lily said bravely.

Cleo sighed, and sand puffed from her golden fur. "You see, I have a friend who everyone says is scary. They call him a zombie. But he's not like the stories say. He's just... forgotten who he is."

From behind the pyramid shuffled a dusty creature with bandages on his arms and a very crooked smile. His name was Zed, and he looked rather shy.

Lily's eyes went wide, but she remembered what her grandmother always said: "Sometimes the scariest-looking things just need someone to see them with their heart."

"Hello, Zed," she said warmly. "I'm Lily. Would you like to hear a joke?"

Zed's dusty face lit up. "Nobody's ever asked me that before."

Lily told him her funniest joke, and Zed laughed so hard that some of his dusty bandages fell away, revealing bright, colorful clothes underneath. As they played and talked, more dust fell away, until Zed remembered everything – he wasn't a zombie at all! He was a magical guardian who had fallen asleep for a hundred years and gotten terribly dusty.

"I knew you'd understand," Cleo purred, giving Zed a gentle nuzzle. "Sometimes people need help remembering who they really are."

When the bubble returned Lily to her bedroom, Finneus swam happily in his bowl. "See?" he bubbled. "The best adventures are the ones where you make friends who surprise you."

Lily fell asleep smiling, knowing that tomorrow she would look at everyone – even people who seemed different – and wonder what wonderful secrets they might be hiding, just waiting for someone kind enough to help them remember who they truly were.
