The Sphinx's Curveball
Lily loved summer days, especially when her dad filled the inflatable pool in the backyard. But today was special—Grandpa had given her his old baseball glove, and she was practicing her pitching against the wooden fence.
Suddenly, the water in the pool began to shimmer like liquid diamonds. A golden creature rose from the depths—not a person, not an animal, but something magical. It had the body of a lion and the head of a wise-looking creature with enormous, sparkling eyes.
"I am Mirabel," the creature said in a voice like gentle wind chimes. "I'm a sphinx, and I've been waiting in this pool for one hundred years for someone who could answer my riddles."
Lily's knees trembled, but she gripped her baseball glove tighter. "I love riddles! But why were you waiting?"
"Because," Mirabel said, smiling, "I need a friend to play baseball with. The last children who found this pool were too frightened to stay."
The sphinx explained that in her magical world, baseball was played with words instead of balls. Each pitch was a riddle, and you had to hit it with the right answer.
"What has hands but cannot clap?" Mirabel asked, throwing an invisible pitch.
"A clock!" Lily shouted, swinging her glove through the air.
"Correct!" The sphinx clapped her golden paws together. "You see, Lily, the real game isn't about winning. It's about listening carefully and thinking bravely."
They played until sunset, solving riddles and laughing. When it was time for Mirabel to return to her pool, she pressed something into Lily's palm—a tiny golden baseball.
"Keep this," the sphinx whispered. "Whenever you feel lonely or afraid, hold it tight. Remember that courage isn't about not being scared. It's about staying curious even when your heart beats fast."
That night, Lily fell asleep with the golden baseball under her pillow, dreaming of riddles and friendship. She learned that the most magical adventures arrive when we're brave enough to say hello to something unexpected—even if it's a sphinx in a swimming pool who loves baseball.
