The Sphinx's Baseball Secret
Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, he practiced hitting and catching in his backyard. But no matter how hard he tried, he always struck out. His messy hair flopped in his eyes as he swung the bat and missed again.
"I'll never be good," Leo sighed, sitting by the old swimming hole behind his house.
Suddenly, the water bubbled. A friendly zombie emerged! He had green skin but a big smile, and he was wearing a baseball cap.
"Hello! I'm Zed," the zombie said cheerfully. "I heard you're having trouble with baseball. I used to play! Want me to teach you?"
Leo's eyes went wide. "A zombie who plays baseball? That's amazing!"
Zed laughed. "The best! But first, you must meet my friend."
He led Leo to a hidden cave where a golden sphinx sat, her wings shimmering like rainbows.
"I am Sphinx," she said kindly. "To be great at baseball, you must solve my riddle. What has roots as nobody sees, is taller than trees, up, up it goes, and yet never grows?"
Leo thought hard. He looked at his baseball bat, at the cave ceiling, at his own messy hair.
"A mountain!" Leo shouted.
"Correct!" Sphinx purred. "Your prize: one magical wish."
"I want to hit a home run!" Leo said.
Sphinx smiled. "Zed will teach you, and you will practice. But the magic comes from believing in yourself."
All summer, Leo and Zed practiced by the swimming hole. Zed showed Leo how to keep his eye on the ball, how to stand strong, and how to swing with confidence.
On the last day of summer, Leo stepped up to the plate. His team was down by one run, two outs, bases loaded. He remembered Zed's lessons and Sphinx's words about believing.
He swung the bat with all his heart.
CRACK!
The ball sailed over the fence—a home run!
"You did it!" Zed cheered from the sidelines.
That night, Leo realized something wonderful: sometimes the best friends and best lessons come from the most unexpected places. And believing in yourself was the greatest magic of all.
