The Sphinx's Baseball Riddle

zombiesphinxfriendbaseball

Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every day after school, he'd grab his glove and run to the old sandlot behind his house. But one afternoon, something magical happened.

As Leo stepped onto the dusty field, the ground began to shimmer. The old backstop transformed into stone pillars, and suddenly, a magnificent sphinx appeared! She had golden wings and kind eyes.

"Young player," she spoke in a voice like wind chimes, "I have guarded this field for a thousand years. To keep playing here, you must answer my riddle."

Leo's heart pounded. The sphinx asked, "What has a face but cannot speak, walks on four legs at dawn, two at noon, and three at twilight?"

Leo's mind went blank. Then he heard a soft groan from behind the bleachers. Out stumbled a green-skinned boy with messy hair and tattered clothes—a zombie!

Leo gasped, but the zombie just smiled shyly. "I'm Zed," he said. "I've been watching you play. You're really good."

"You're... a zombie?"

"Yes," Zed nodded. "But I'm not scary. I just love baseball too. I used to play back in... well, a long time ago."

The sphinx watched them both. "Sometimes," she said wisely, "the best answers come from working together."

Leo looked at Zed. "Do you know the answer?"

Zed's face lit up. "It's a person! A baby crawls on all fours, adults walk on two legs, and old people use canes!"

"Correct!" The sphinx clapped her paws together. "You have shown wisdom and friendship."

She vanished, leaving behind two gleaming baseball bats. "Play together, and the magic will never end."

And that's how Leo found the best friend he could ever imagine. They played baseball every day, and nobody at school could believe that Leo's new best buddy was a zombie who could hit home runs like a pro.

Leo learned that sometimes the most different people can become the greatest friends. And that's the best kind of magic there is.
