The Sphinx's Baseball Riddle

Lily pushed aside the curtain of **palm** fronds in her backyard, gasping at what she saw. The swimming **pool** was glowing blue, and sitting on the diving board was a magnificent creature—a golden **sphinx** with emerald eyes and wings that shimmered like rainbow.

"Greetings, young one," the sphinx purred. "I am Cleo, Guardian of Games. Will you play with me?"

Lily's heart raced with excitement. "Yes! But what do we play?"

Celo smiled mysteriously. "**Baseball**, but with a twist." She waved her paw, and the diving board transformed into home plate. The pool became an emerald field of floating lily pads.

Lily's older brother Jake appeared, holding his lucky baseball bat. "Whoa! What's happening?"

"A challenge!" Cleo announced. "Hit the ball into the magic pool. Where it lands determines your quest."

Jake swung first. The ball sailed through the air and landed on a lily pad. Cleo announced, "You must share something precious with someone who needs it."

Jake frowned, thinking. Then he smiled. "I have extra **spinach** from my garden project. I'll give it to Mrs. Chen for her rabbits!"

"Wise choice," Cleo nodded. "Lily, your turn."

Lily gripped the bat. She remembered how Jake had shared his toys with her when she was sad. She swung with all her might. The ball arced beautifully and landed on the highest lily pad.

"Impossible shots require impossible courage," Cleo said. "Your quest: help someone face their fear."

Lily knew exactly what to do. Her little cousin Maya was afraid of swimming. "Maya!" she called. "Come play in the magic pool with us! The sphinx says she'll teach you to float like a feather!"

Cleo's wings sparkled. "Together, you have solved my riddle. The greatest magic isn't in spells or wishes—it's in kindness and courage."

That summer, the pool became famous. Every child who came left with a new friend and a brave heart. And sometimes, if you looked carefully near the palm trees, you could still see Cleo's emerald eyes watching over them, smiling.

"Remember," she would whisper on the breeze, "the real magic was inside you all along."
