The Sphinx's Baseball Game
Maya had the craziest hair in her whole school. It poofed out like a brown cloud, and no matter how much she brushed it, it always bounced right back. She used to hate it, until the day it saved her.
That Saturday, Maya was exploring her grandmother's attic when she found something strange: a shimmering golden cable that seemed to hum. When she touched it, the cable zipped through the floorboards like a snake, pulling her along as she went running after it through fields of purple grass and trees that grew cotton candy.
The cable stopped at the most amazing thing Maya had ever seen—a Sphinx with emerald eyes and golden fur, sitting behind home plate on the most beautiful baseball field ever made.
"Welcome, small one!" the Sphinx purred. "I've waited fifty years for someone with hair wild enough to play baseball with me."
Maya blinked. "You play baseball?"
"Baseball is the greatest game!" The Sphinx's whiskers twitched with excitement. "But there's a catch. My magical baseball can only be caught by someone whose heart is as wild as their hair."
He tossed Maya a ball that sparkled like it held a galaxy inside. When she threw it back, it zinged through the air and burst into butterflies. When the Sphinx hit it with his ancient bat, the ball went running off into the clouds.
"After it!" roared the Sphinx, grinning.
Maya sprinted across bases that floated in the sky, her crazy hair streaming behind her like a superhero cape. She caught the ball just as it was about to fly into the sun.
The Sphinx clapped his mighty paws. "You caught it! You're the first one in fifty years!"
They played until the stars came out, and the golden cable zipped Maya home just in time for dinner.
The next day at school, when someone made fun of her wild hair, Maya just smiled. Her hair wasn't messy. It was magical.
And sometimes, when she closed her eyes, she could still hear the Sphinx calling, "Play ball!"
