The Sphinx's Baseball Game
Emma loved exploring the attic. One rainy afternoon, she found something strange — an old iphone that didn't look like any phone she'd ever seen. Its screen glowed purple instead of blue.
Emma touched the screen, and suddenly she wasn't in the attic anymore. She stood on a cloud! In front of her rose a magnificent sphinx with shimmering golden hair that flowed like honey in sunlight. The sphinx's eyes sparkled like morning stars.
"Welcome, small one," the sphinx purred. "We've been waiting for someone who loves adventure."
Waiting? Who else would be here? Then Emma heard a deep, friendly laugh. A giant brown bear trotted onto the cloud, wearing a baseball cap backward.
"Finally! A player!" The bear cheered, holding a baseball bat. "I'm Bernie! Want to play baseball with the Sphinx?"
Emma's eyes widened. "You play baseball?"
"The BEST baseball!" Bernie said. "In the cloud league!"
The sphinx smiled, her golden hair glinting. "But first, a challenge. What makes someone a true friend?"
Emma thought hard. She remembered sharing her lunch with the new kid at school, helping her little brother tie his shoes, reading stories to her grandmother.
"Someone who's kind, who shares, and who stays by your side even when things are hard," Emma said softly.
The sphinx's wings unfolded like sunrise. "Correct. You understand the most important magic."
Bernie tossed Emma a glove. "Then you're on our team! The magical Cloud Chasers!"
They played the most wonderful game. Bernie hit home runs that turned into rainbows. The sphinx caught fly balls that sparkled like fireworks. Emma's throws sailed through clouds like shooting stars.
Too soon, the old iphone began to beep. Emma knew it was time to go home.
"Will you come back?" Bernie asked, his eyes hopeful.
"Every day," Emma promised, hugging the fluffy bear tight.
When Emma appeared back in her attic, she was still holding a real baseball — one that glowed softly, magical and warm. She tucked it safely under her pillow, knowing she'd made friends she'd treasure forever.
And sometimes, when she looked at her old iphone, Emma could see the sphinx's golden hair shimmering in the distance, reminding her that kindness opens doors to the most magical adventures.
