The Sphinx's Baseball Game
Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every afternoon after school, he'd practice pitching in his backyard, dreaming of the big leagues.
One sunny day, Leo threw his favorite baseball with all his might. It soared higher and higher, then disappeared into a strange golden pyramid that had suddenly appeared in his neighbor's yard.
"That's weird," Leo whispered, creeping closer. The pyramid shimmered like sunshine on water. He touched its smooth side—and whoosh! He tumbled inside into a room filled with sparkling sand.
"Who enters my domain?" boomed a deep voice.
Leo looked up. A giant sphinx sat on a stone throne, her lion body gleaming golden in the torchlight.
"I'm Leo," he squeaked. "I lost my baseball."
The sphinx's eyes twinkled. "I'll return it if you can answer my riddle: What has diamonds but no money, runs around bases but never moves, and brings friends together in the sun?"
"Baseball!" Leo shouted. "I play it every day!"
The sphinx smiled. "Correct. But I'm lonely here. Will you play with me?"
"But you're..." Leo started.
"Huge? A sphinx? Yes. But I love games!"
Suddenly, a tiny goldfish swam through the air beside them. "Pick me! I'm your teammate!" the fish bubbled excitedly.
Then a friendly bull lumbered out from behind a pillar. "And I'll be the umpire!" the bull announced with a gentle smile.
Leo couldn't believe his eyes—a magical baseball game with a sphinx, a flying goldfish, and a bull umpire!
They played until sunset, laughing and cheering. The sphinx was amazing at pitching, the goldfish could fly anywhere to catch balls, and the bull made the fairest calls Leo had ever heard.
"This is the best game ever," Leo said as the pyramid began to fade.
"Friends make everything fun," the sphinx said, handing Leo his baseball. "Come back anytime."
Leo woke in his backyard holding his baseball. Had it been a dream? But then he noticed something sparkling in his pocket—a tiny golden scale from his fish friend.
Sometimes the most magical adventures happen when you're brave enough to make new friends, no matter how different they might seem.
