The Sphinx's Baseball Game

Lily loved her old baseball cap. It was blue with a golden star, and she never played without it. One sunny afternoon, she and her dog, Barnaby, were playing catch in the backyard when something strange happened. Barnaby chased the ball toward the garden and started barking excitedly.

When Lily ran over, she couldn't believe her eyes. There, between the rosebushes and the orange tree, sat a tiny sphinx no bigger than a garden gnome. Its stone body was covered in moss, and its wings sparkled like dewdrops in the sunlight.

"Are you real?" Lily whispered, adjusting her hat.

The sphinx nodded. "I'm very real, and very bored. I've been sleeping in your garden for fifty years. I heard you playing baseball—is it as fun as the ancient Egyptians said it would be?"

Lily giggled. "Want to try?"

The sphinx's wings fluttered. "Yes! But first, you must answer my riddle. What has eyes but cannot see?"

Lily thought hard. Then she smiled. "A potato! Or... a baseball!"

"Correct!" The sphinx clapped its paws together. "Now, show me this game of baseball."

For the next hour, Lily, Barnaby, and the sphinx played the most magical game ever. The sphinx used its wings to catch impossible balls. Barnaby ran circles around them, barking with joy. And when Lily's favorite orange from the tree rolled onto the field, the sphinx used it as a ball that glowed golden as it flew through the air.

As the sun began to set, the sphinx grew sleepy again. "Thank you for the adventure," it said, curling up beside the orange tree. "I'll remember this game forever. Friends who play together stay together."

Lily touched her hat and smiled. "We'll play again tomorrow."

Barnaby curled up beside the sphinx, and Lily knew that magic was real—especially when you share it with friends.
