The Sphinx's Baseball Game

Lily loved her worn-out baseball. It had scuff marks from every game she'd played with her best friend, Mateo. But today, Mateo had moved away, and the baseball felt heavy in her hands.

"I wish I had someone to play catch with," she whispered, tossing the ball toward the old oak tree in her backyard.

Instead of hitting the trunk, the ball sailed straight through a shimmering patch of air that hadn't been there before. Lily gasped and stepped through after it.

On the other side, the sky swirled with colors like cotton candy. A giant golden sphinx with kind amber eyes sat peacefully nearby. The sphinx wasn't scary at all—it smiled gently.

"Welcome, young friend," the sphinx rumbled softly. "I've been waiting for someone who loves games."

A friendly bear with fur the color of autumn leaves waddled over, holding Lily's baseball. "I'm Barnaby! Would you teach me how to play?"

Lily smiled, feeling warm inside. "I'd love to! But we need something to hit the ball with."

The sphinx nodded wisely. A silver cable curled from the sky like a snake, transforming into a perfect baseball bat.

"Magic!" Lily cheered.

They played all afternoon. Barnaby the bear wasn't very good at first—he kept swinging too early—but Lily didn't mind. The sphinx told riddles between turns, and the silver cable magicaly retrieved the ball every time it went too far.

As the cotton candy sky turned to twilight, the sphinx spoke kindly. "Lily, you found new friends today. But remember, true friendship bridges any distance, like my silver cable connects worlds."

Lily realized something wonderful. Just because Mateo was far away didn't mean they weren't still friends. And she could make new friends too.

"Thank you," she hugged Barnaby and waved to the sphinx.

Back in her yard, Lily's baseball sat in the grass. It gleamed like it had been polished by stardust. That night, she wrote a letter to Mateo, beginning with the most important words:

"Dear friend, you'll never guess who I played baseball with today..."

And somewhere, beyond the shimmering patch of air, a sphinx and a bear were already practicing their swing.
