The Sphinx's Baseball Game
Leo loved baseball more than anything. Every Saturday, he'd grab his glove and run to the old diamond behind the park. But this Saturday was different. A giant golden sphinx sat on the pitcher's mound, her lion tail twitching.
"I am the Sphinx of Summer," she rumbled, her voice like warm thunder. "Answer my riddle, and you may play."
Leo nodded bravely. "I'm ready!"
"I have no bones, but I love to play. I can fly through air or swim away. What am I?"
Leo thought hard. He looked at his baseball glove, then at the clouds above. Suddenly, his orange cat Whiskers trotted onto the field, meowing loudly. A bubble floated past them, carried by the breeze.
"A bubble!" Leo shouted. "A bubble loves to play, it flies, and if it lands on water, it can swim!"
The Sphinx smiled, her golden eyes sparkling. "Correct. But first, you must meet my friend."
From behind the Sphinx's massive paw shuffled a green figure. Leo gasped—a zombie! But this zombie wore a baseball cap and held a dusty bat.
"This is Zack," the Sphinx purred. "He's not scary. He just needs someone to play catch with."
Zack smiled crookedly. "Play... ball?" he grunted happily.
Leo grinned. "I'll play! But I'm better at swimming than baseball."
"Perfect!" said the Sphinx. "Today's game is at the magical pool beyond the trees."
They walked together to a crystal-clear pond where baseballs floated like rubber ducks. Zack hit the balls, and Leo swam to catch them. Whiskers dove in too, paddling after splashes of water. The Sphinx watched, purring like a giant cat.
"Never judge someone by how they look," the Sphinx whispered as they played. "Even a zombie can be a wonderful friend."
That summer, Leo, Zack, and Whiskers played every day. And whenever Leo saw someone new and different, he remembered the Sphinx's lesson. Sometimes the best friends come in the most surprising packages.
