The Sphinx's Baseball Game
Maya tossed her baseball into the air, practicing her pitch in the backyard. Her curly hair bounced with every throw. She wanted to be a pitcher just like her big brother.
Suddenly, the ball sailed over the fence toward the old park. Maya ran after it, following the path beside the sparkling water of Silver Creek. The sun made the water dance like tiny diamonds.
In the middle of the park, something amazing appeared. A real sphinx sat on a stone bench! But this sphinx wasn't scary at all. She had kind eyes and a warm smile.
"You throw beautifully," the sphinx said in a voice like gentle wind chimes. "I am Cleo. Would you like to play?"
Maya's eyes grew wide. "You know baseball?"
Cleo laughed, and her long golden hair shimmered in the sunlight. "I've watched children play for thousands of years. I've always wanted to try."
They tossed the ball back and forth. Cleo was a natural! She showed Maya a special trick—how to make the ball curve like magic.
"You're my best friend," Maya said, grinning.
Cleo's smile grew even warmer. "And you, Maya, are a wonderful friend too. Friendship is the greatest treasure of all."
As the sun began to set, Cleo handed Maya a special stone shaped like a tiny sphinx. "Keep this. Whenever you practice, I'll be cheering for you."
Maya ran home, her heart full of joy. She couldn't wait to tell everyone about her magical day—and her new friend who loved baseball as much as she did.
From then on, every time Maya stepped onto the field, she felt a little extra magic in the air, reminding her that dreams really do come true.
