The Sphinx's Bad Hair Day
Lila and Max loved playing padel on the sunny court behind Lila's house. Every afternoon after school, they'd hit the ball back and forth, laughing as they ran across the court.
One day, Max hit the ball extra hard, and it sailed over the fence into the neighbor's mysterious garden. Lila peeked through the gate and gasped. The garden was filled with sparkling palm trees that glowed pink and gold.
"Let's go get it," Lila whispered, opening the gate.
As they crept past the glowing palms, they heard a soft sobbing sound. Behind the largest palm tree sat a creature they'd only seen in books—a sphinx! She had the body of a golden lion and the face of a kind woman, but something was wrong.
"What's wrong?" Lila asked bravely.
The sphinx looked up with tears in her big brown eyes. "My beautiful hair!" she cried, pawing at the tangled mess on her head. "The wind tangled it, and my paws are too clumsy to fix it. I can't see properly to solve my riddles!"
Max and Lila looked at each other and smiled. "We can help!"
For the next hour, the children sat with the sphinx, gently combing her long, flowing hair until it shimmered like spun gold. Lila braided it into two neat plaits while Max told funny jokes to make her laugh.
"Thank you," the sphinx beamed, her mane now neat and tidy. "You've been so kind. Let me give you something in return." She tapped her padel racquet—wait, she had a racquet?—and suddenly Lila and Max each held a golden bracelet that glowed with magic. "These will help you always find your way home, no matter how far you adventure."
"That's our ball!" Max pointed to the padel ball glowing near the sphinx's paw.
The sphinx laughed, a sound like wind chimes. "Take it, my friends. And come back anytime. My hair might need help again!"
Lila and Max walked home, hands clasped tight, their magical bracelets twinkling in the sunset. They'd learned that sometimes the best adventures come from helping others, even mysterious sphinxes with bad hair days.
