The Sphinx's Backyard Secret
Leo pressed his eye to the hole in the wooden fence, feeling like the best detective in the world. Being a spy was exciting! Every afternoon, he spied on Mrs. Higgins' garden, watching the butterflies dance among the roses. But today, something magical happened.
A bright flash of lightning crackled across the clear blue sky—but there were no clouds! Leo blinked. Where the lightning had struck, a golden sphinx appeared, right there in the neighbor's garden. The sphinx had the body of a fluffy lion and the face of a wise owl, with sparkling purple eyes.
"Young spy," the sphinx called in a voice like wind chimes, "I need your help! My magical zombie bunny has hopped away again!"
"A zombie bunny?" Leo gasped.
"Yes! He's not scary," the sphinx explained. "Barnaby is just very, very sleepy and moves slowly. That's why we call him a zombie. He guards my riddle book, but he loves carrot cake more than anything!"
Leo's heart raced with excitement. "I'll help you find him!"
Together, they searched behind the oak tree and under the porch. Finally, Leo spotted something gray and floppy behind the pumpkin patch. There was Barnaby, nibbling on a fallen carrot, moving in slow motion.
"Found him!" Leo cheered.
The sphinx smiled. "For your kindness, young friend, here's a gift." She touched Leo's forehead with a golden paw. "Now you can speak to all animals. Use this gift wisely."
Leo waved goodbye as the sphinx and Barnaby vanished in another sparkle of lightning. Running home, he heard a sparrow chirp, "Thank you for helping!" and knew this was just the beginning of many magical adventures.
