The Sphinx's Backyard Riddle

Leo loved his red baseball cap more than anything. It was his lucky hat, and he always wore it when he played catch in the backyard. One sunny afternoon, Leo threw his favorite baseball high into the air, but it sailed over the fence and splashed into his neighbor's above-ground pool.

Leo climbed carefully to the pool's edge. The water began to glow golden, shimmering like sunshine. Suddenly, the water swirled upward, forming the shape of a magnificent sphinx—a creature with the body of a lion and the face of a wise person.

"Young adventurer," the sphinx spoke in a voice like gentle thunder, "your baseball has awakened me from my hundred-year sleep. To retrieve it, you must solve my riddle."

Leo's heart pounded with excitement. "I'm ready!"

"I have steps but cannot climb," the sphinx rumbled, eyes twinkling like stars. "I have a point at the top but no pencil's tip. What am I?"

Leo thought hard. Then he remembered his book about ancient Egypt. "A pyramid!"

The sphinx smiled, and behind it, a glittering golden pyramid rose from the pool's depths, no bigger than a shoebox. "Correct, young friend. But there is more to your treasure than a game."

The sphinx tossed Leo his baseball, but it had changed—now it shone with ancient hieroglyphs. "This ball will always return to you, just as kindness always finds its way back to those who give it freely."

From that day on, Leo and the sphinx became secret friends. Every time Leo played baseball, the sphinx would appear with a new riddle, and Leo learned that the best adventures come not just from winning games, but from making magical friends who challenge you to think, wonder, and believe in impossible things.

And sometimes, when no one was watching, Leo would climb the mini pyramid in his backyard, wearing his lucky hat, and dream of all the riddles still waiting to be solved.
