The Sphinx's Backyard Quest

Lily loved her backyard more than anywhere in the world. But today, something magical happened. Her stuffed bear, Barnaby, twitched his fuzzy brown nose and winked at her!

"Lily!" Barnaby whispered. "The Sphinx needs our help!"

Lily's eyes went wide. A real sphinx? In her yard?

She followed Barnaby behind the old palm tree where her dad hung his hammock. There, nestled between the roots, sat a tiny sphinx no bigger than a garden gnome. Her wings shimmered like soap bubbles, and her eyes held the wisdom of a thousand storybooks.

"Greetings, young friends," the Sphinx said in a voice like wind chimes. "My poor friend Zim got lost on his way to the Monster's Ball. He's not scary—he's just a little zombie who forgot the way!"

"A zombie?" Lily asked, clutching Barnaby's paw.

"Oh, Zim is very nice," the Sphinx assured her. "He just stutters a bit and sometimes loses his shoe. Will you help me find him?"

Lily nodded. "I'll be a spy! I can spy through the fence cracks!"

The Sphinx gifted Lily a magical palm leaf that glowed green when pointed toward lost things. Together, they crept around the yard, peeking through bushes and checking under the porch.

Finally, behind the compost bin, Lily spotted him. Zim was a friendly green zombie with one sock missing, sitting sadly in the dirt.

"Are you lost?" Lily asked gently.

Zim nodded. "I w-w-wanted to d-d-dance, but I f-f-forgot the way."

Lily took his slimy hand. "We'll go together. Barnaby will lead the way!"

The four friends—girl, bear, sphinx, and zombie—paraded to the garden gate. The Sphinx gave Zim her golden wing as a ticket to the ball.

"Thank you," Zim smiled, his jagged teeth looking sweet. "You're the b-b-best friends ever."

As the Sphinx flew Zim toward the distant Monster's Ball, she called back, "True friends help those who need it most, even when they seem different."

That night, Lily hugged Barnaby tight. Sometimes, the best adventures happen right in your own backyard—and the best friends come in all shapes, sizes, and even monster types!
