The Sphinx's Backyard Pool
Lily loved baseball. Every afternoon after school, she'd grab her glove and head to the backyard, throwing the ball high into the air and practicing her catches. But today, something strange happened.
Her orange tabby cat, Marmalade, trotted toward the old swimming pool behind the garage. The pool had been empty for years—or so Lily thought. When she peered over the edge, she gasped.
The pool was filled not with water, but with sparkling blue mist swirling like a tiny galaxy. And in the center sat the most magnificent creature Lily had ever seen.
A sphinx the size of a golden retriever, with lion paws, eagle wings, and wise amber eyes.
"You found my secret pool," the sphinx purred, in a voice like honey and wind chimes.
Marmalade rubbed affectionately against the sphinx's paw. "She visits every day," the cat meowed—to Lily's astonishment. "Cats can see magic everywhere."
"I've been trapped here for three hundred years," the sphinx sighed. "I need someone truly kind to free me."
Lily's heart raced. "What do I need to do?"
The sphinx smiled mysteriously. "Something simple, yet difficult. Bring me something green that grew with love, share it with someone new, and speak the words: 'Friendship unlocks all doors.'"
Lily ran to the garden, where her grandmother had planted spinach that morning. She gathered the tender green leaves, remembering how Grandma's hands had gently patted the soil. She returned to the pool and shared the spinach with both the sphinx and Marmalade.
"Friendship unlocks all doors!" Lily declared.
The blue mist turned to golden light. The sphinx grew until she became a magnificent guardian, wings stretching across the sky.
"Thank you," the sphinx whispered. "Your kindness has broken the spell. I grant you one wish."
Lily thought carefully. "I wish for everyone to find magic in unexpected places."
The sphinx touched Lily's forehead with a velvet paw. "It is already within you."
With a sparkle of starlight, the sphinx flew toward the clouds. Marmalade purred as the pool filled with crystal-clear water.
That summer, Lily discovered magic everywhere—in her grandmother's garden, in Marmalade's mysterious adventures, and even in her baseball games, where the wind seemed to cheer her on.
And sometimes, when she looked up at the sky, she'd see a golden sphinx flying among the clouds, watching over her.
