The Sphinx on the Padel Court

padelpapayasphinxcat

Maya's third day at Oakwood Prep and she still felt like a fraud in her too-short uniform. The popular crew dominated the **padel** courts after lunch, their laughter echoing across the quad like something from a movie she'd never been cast in.

"You coming?" Chloe asked, dangling an extra racket like bait. Maya hesitated — her reflexes were trash, and everyone would see.

She ended up behind the science building instead, where a massive stone **sphinx** glowered from atop a crumbling pedestal. Local lore claimed if you told it your biggest secret, it would keep it forever. Rumor was, some girl confessed she was gay here in '98, and somehow the whole school found out anyway.

The **cat** — a ragged orange tabby with one ear — appeared like clockwork, winding through Maya's legs like he owned the place.

"You wouldn't get it either," she muttered, sinking against the cold stone. Her mom had packed her lunch again: plantain chips, **papaya** slices, those pink things that screamed "I'm different" in a cafeteria where everyone else had sandwiches from home.

A shadow fell across her. It was Chloe, still holding that extra racket.

"Sphinx still got nothing for you?" Chloe grinned, not mean, just knowing. "Last year I told it I failed algebra twice. Nothing happened. But my mom found out anyway, obviously."

Maya's stomach did that thing where it forgot how to be a stomach. "You failed ALGEBRA?"

"Twice." Chloe dropped the racket beside her. "Want some?" She held out a container of something bright and pink-fleshed. **Papaya**. Chill seeds removed, the way Maya's abuela did it.

"You like **papaya**?"

"Love it. My grandma's from P.R." Chloe sat cross-legged in her uniform, like that was normal. "My little brother calls it 'paw-paw' 'cause he can't say it right. It's embarrassing but kinda cute."

The **cat** headbutted Maya's hand, demanding attention like he hadn't just witnessed her entire emotional crisis.

"Your turn," Chloe said. "What would you tell the **sphinx**?"

The truth spilled out before Maya could stop it. "That I'm terrified everyone here figured out I don't belong before I even started."

Chloe popped a **papaya** slice into her mouth, thoughtful. "Yeah, I felt that way too. Then I realized literally everyone's faking it. Even Jackson." She jerked her chin toward the **padel** courts, where Jackson was currently missing an easy shot and laughing it off.

"Jackson?"

"Failed history last year. His dad donated a library so they wouldn't hold him back."

Something in Maya's chest unlocked.

"So," Chloe said, wiping sticky fingers on her skirt. "You gonna play **padel** with us or what?"

"I suck at sports."

"Me too. We lose every game. It's actually kind of glorious."

The **cat** purred, entirely unimpressed with their character development.

"Fine," Maya said. "But I'm not wearing that skirt."

"Wear shorts. Nobody cares. Seriously, we had a guy wear a kimono for spirit week and he's basically a legend now."

Walking toward the courts together, Maya felt something shift. Not big — not like the stories promised. Just small. Real.

The **sphinx** kept its secrets, as always. But maybe that's the thing about secrets — they only have power when you're too afraid to say them out loud.
