The Sphinx on the Court

Maya gripped her iPhone so hard her thumb slipped, typing and deleting the same text for the third time.

"u coming to padel today?"

The message sat there, delivered but unread. Maya's stomach did that familiar flip—the one that had nothing to do with the cheeseburger she'd eaten for lunch and everything to do with Leo, whose locker was three down from hers and who smiled like he knew something she didn't.

She was practically acting like a spy at this point, memorizing his schedule, timing her bathroom breaks to coincide with his, perfecting the art of walking past him without looking like she was walking past him. It was exhausting. It was also kind of pathetic, according to her best friend Sam, who said Maya needed to get a life.

But Sam didn't understand. Leo was like a sphinx—mysterious, impossible to read, with those dark eyes that seemed to hold secrets. Last week, when their English teacher had assigned them to analyze Oedipus and the Riddle of the Sphinx, Leo had caught Maya staring at him across the classroom. He'd just smirked, like he knew exactly what she was thinking.

The phone buzzed.

"wouldnt miss it 🎾"

Maya nearly dropped her iPhone.

At the padel courts that afternoon, Leo was already there, wearing those ridiculous bright green shoes he never took off. His hair was damp with sweat, curling at his temples. Maya felt her face heating up and told herself it was just the sun.

"You gonna stand there all day or are we playing?" Leo called, grinning.

A flash of orange caught Maya's eye—a fox, sleek and brazen, trotting along the fence line like it owned the place. It paused, watching them with amber eyes, before slipping into the brush.

"Did you see that?" Maya pointed.

Leo nodded. "Happens every Tuesday. The fox thinks the courts are its personal hunting ground."

Maya blinked. "Every Tuesday?"

"Yeah." Leo's expression shifted, something flickering behind his usual confident exterior. "I come here on Tuesdays. Sometimes I just... need to get away from everything, you know?"

The sphinx cracked open.

They played padel until the sun painted the sky pink, Leo's competitive spirit matching Maya's own. When they finally sat on the bench, exhausted, their shoulders brushing, Maya's phone buzzed with a text from Sam:

"so??? r u gonna stop being a spy and actually talk to him or what"

Maya tucked the phone away. She wasn't spying anymore. She wasn't watching from the edges, decoding Leo like some ancient riddle. The fox, the sphinx, the spy games—they were just background noise to what was actually happening.

"Same time next week?" Maya asked, her voice steady.

Leo's smile was genuine this time. "Definitely."

The iPhone stayed in her pocket. She didn't need it anymore.
