The Sphinx of Third Period History

Maya had perfected the art of being invisible in Room 204, right behind the cardboard pyramid project that smelled like Sharpie and existential dread. She was basically a professional at this point—third-row observer, background character, extra in her own life. But today, her spy game was weaker than usual because HE was sitting two desks away.

Lucas. The guy who'd grown like six inches over summer and now had that whole effortless-cute vibe that made Maya's brain short-circuit.

"Hey, can you believe this sphinx project?" Lucas whispered, actually talking to her. MAYA.

She managed something that sounded like a dying seal. Smooth. Real smooth.

"Mr. Harrison wants us to write riddles," Lucas continued, either not noticing her internal combustion or being too nice to mention it. "You good at riddles?"

"I'm good at being a zombie," Maya blurted, then immediately wanted to dissolve into the floor tiles. "I mean—school. Finals. The whole... brain-dead thing."

Lucas laughed. Not the polite laugh. The REAL one. "Dude, same. I've had like three Red Bulls this morning and I'm still operating at 50% capacity."

They were BONDING. This was NOT a drill.

"So the sphinx thing," Maya said, finding actual words. "We could do something meta? Like, riddles about how confusing high school is?"

Lucas's eyes lit up. "That's actually genius. 'What walks through halls but has no purpose, speaks but says nothing, and dies slowly every period?'"

"Us?" Maya joked, and Lucas full-on smiled.

"Wanna work on it together? After school?"

Maya nodded, trying to look casual while internally screaming. She'd been accidentally spying on Lucas's Spotify playlists for months (don't judge, his taste was impeccable) and now they were PROJECT PARTNERS.

The bell rang. As everyone shuffled out, Lucas turned back. "See you at the pyramid, Maya."

The pyramid. Their spot.

She walked to her next class feeling like maybe, just maybe, she wasn't invisible anymore. Not a spy in her own life, not a zombie surviving through the week. Just Maya, potentially-about-to-work-on-a-history-project-with-her-crush Maya.

Progress.
